Internet Computer: An Introduction

Learn the fundamentals of the Internet Computer and its unique features, gaining insights into its contributions to decentralized computing.

Internet Computer: History

The story of the Internet Computer begins in 2013 when Dominic Williams, the founder of the DFINITY Foundation, was inspired by the rise of Bitcoin.

At first, Dominic worked on a blockchain project called "Pebble" to improve computer games. But by 2015, he had a bigger idea: a World Computer blockchain that could transform traditional IT systems. Although many were skeptical, Dominic devoted himself to blockchain research and founded the DFINITY Foundation in 2016.

Early challenges included getting support for his vision. The Foundation managed to raise funds through a seed donation in 2017, followed by significant investments in 2018, which helped expand their operations.

Key hires, such as CTO Jan Camenisch, helped establish a strong research center in Zürich. The team focused on advanced cryptography, producing over 1500 research papers and many patents.

In 2021, the Internet Computer was launched, featuring a new non-interactive DKG protocol for key generation. The system was explained in the "The Internet Computer for Geeks" paper, showcasing its unique blockchain architecture and adaptive, self-governing network.

Despite some initial attacks and disruptions, the Internet Computer community quickly grew. Developers started building projects entirely on the blockchain, highlighting its potential to replace traditional IT and drive a new era of blockchain technology.
