The Internet Computer requires specific hardware for Internet Identity authentication and security purposes. This is because Internet Identity uses a cryptographic key pair that's stored in your local device's hardware for authentication. This allows you to authenticate to your Internet Identity using methods that unlock your device, such as TouchID, FaceID, or another method.
Users do not need to have a device with biometrics to use the Internet Identity. There should be an option to use the computer screen unlock passcode, laptop fingerprint scanner, and/or phone screen unlock, and pin code. The screen unlock feature must be active on the device for that option to be available.
FIDO U2F-supporting devices can also be used for Internet Identity. DFINITY does not sell these devices.
